1. Connect with colleagues using LinkedIn

Play MP3 Play audio introduction for this task

Welcome to 23 Things for 2008. This year we add 5 new tasks to the 23 existing tasks.

What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a business oriented social networking site which enables professionals to connect each other from a wide range of fields. It also allows users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. Users can invite anyone to become a connection. All relationships on LinkedIn are mutually confirmed and no one appears in the LinkedIn Network without knowledge and explicit consent.

Join the LinkedIn network!

A basic LinkedIn account is free. It is very easy to join LinkedIn.

Create a Profile!

When you join LinkedIn, you are asked to create a public profile that summarises your professional accomplishments. Your profile helps you find and be found by former colleagues, clients and partners. You can control the amount of information others are able to see on your public profile.

Using Your Network!

You can build and add to your connections by inviting trusted contacts to join LinkedIn and connect to them. You can connect to people through:
  • Your connections
  • People in your network
  • People who viewed your profile
  • Your In Mail

"LinkedIn introduced a new Company Profile feature within its professional networking platform. The result of a partnership with BusinessWeek.com and Capital IQ, members can now see more than 160,000 profiles of companies on LinkedIn, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to philanthropic organizations. Included is a company's industry data in combination with data culled from LinkedIn along certain key metrics, such as common job titles, median age, and median tenure. Users are also shown a list of LinkedIn users in their networks (up to 3 degrees away) who work at a company, plus a list of new hires, recent promotions and changes, and jobs posted."
